Under the bright California sun, a crowd gathered in Santa Maria to mark a significant milestone in the city’s aviation history—the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Plains of Fame Air Museum. This event, celebrated on March 8, 2025, is the culmination of a journey that began in 2022, promising to transform the local landscape and enrich the community.

As attendees admired the vintage Lockheed Electra, reminiscent of the aircraft flown by Amelia Earhart, city manager Dave Rose took to the podium. Representing Mayor Patino and the city council, Rose expressed excitement about the museum's potential to serve as a civic amenity and a regional attraction. “This museum will bring visitors from throughout the region to Santa Maria, serve local veterans, and host various events such as the Central Coast Air Fest,” he stated, highlighting the economic benefits that would accompany the influx of tourists.

The new facility, set to span over 56,000 square feet, will feature a large main display hangar showcasing many flyable World War II-era aircraft. With a collection of over 60 aircraft, the museum aims to engage the community through flight demonstrations, air shows, and educational programs for local students. Rose emphasized the museum's role in inspiring future generations, stating, “A future where aviation history continues to inspire, where students discover new possibilities, and where communities come together.”
