The GCSD Board of Education meeting on March 4, 2025, unveiled a comprehensive technology plan aimed at enhancing the district's digital infrastructure and addressing critical needs in device management and network security. Superintendent Smalley introduced Brad Malone, the Executive Director of Information and Instructional Technology, who presented findings from a thorough review of the district's technology resources.

Malone highlighted the need for a streamlined approach to staff devices, revealing that while 1,700 employees require daily access to devices, approximately 3,400 are currently assigned. This surplus has led to maintenance challenges and an aging fleet. To rectify this, Malone proposed a shift towards a more efficient allocation of devices, aiming for a one-to-one ratio tailored to specific job functions. Additionally, a clear device refresh schedule will be established to ensure timely replacements.

For student devices, the district plans to assign Chromebooks to individual students in grades K, 3, 6, and 9, rather than relying on class sets. This change aims to enhance accessibility and support for summer academic programs. Furthermore, Malone announced a transition to a warranty system for device repairs, which is expected to expedite turnaround times and stabilize costs.

The meeting also addressed the urgent need to upgrade the district's network infrastructure. Malone reported that a significant portion of the wireless network equipment is nearing the end of support, posing security risks. A two-year plan has been developed to replace the entire wireless network, ensuring improved security and functionality.

Lastly, the district's outdated telephony system will undergo a complete overhaul this summer, transitioning to a cloud-based solution to enhance reliability and control.

These initiatives reflect the district's commitment to modernizing its technology framework, ultimately aiming to provide better resources for both staff and students. The board's proactive approach is expected to significantly improve the educational environment and operational efficiency in the coming years.
