Stratford High School students excel at leadership conference and community events

On January 6, 2025, the Stratford Board of Education convened for its monthly meeting, highlighting a range of student achievements and initiatives that reflect the district's commitment to educational excellence and community engagement.

One of the key discussions centered around the recent participation of Stratford High School (SHS) students in the CAS and CIAC student leadership conference at Southern Connecticut State University. Thirteen students, accompanied by staff members Samantha Pugh and Isaac So, engaged in breakout sessions focused on topics such as mental health, teamwork in STEM, and college preparation. This experience was praised as a valuable opportunity for student growth and leadership development.

In the arts, SHS students participated in the national magnet exchange, collaborating with peers from 33 states to create magnets themed "We Grow Together." This initiative not only fosters creativity but also promotes connections among students nationwide. Additionally, the school's fine arts department showcased its talent through performances of "Elf the Musical," which received positive community support.

The meeting also addressed the ongoing efforts of the school counseling department, which has been actively assisting seniors with college applications and financial aid processes. With the FAFSA application period now open, counselors are extending their support beyond regular hours to help families navigate this critical step in post-secondary planning.

Athletic achievements were also celebrated, with the SHS football team making significant strides by reaching the semifinals of the Class M state tournament, marking their first playoff victory in 17 years. The induction of new members into the Bunnell High School Athletic Hall of Fame further highlighted the district's commitment to recognizing student-athlete accomplishments.

In addition to these highlights, the meeting included discussions on community service initiatives, such as the Great Rake event organized by SHS National Honor Society students, which aimed to assist local residents. The importance of civic engagement was underscored by the presence of local registrar Louis DeSilio, who spoke about encouraging students to register to vote and understand the electoral process.
