Park board agrees to purchase land for Prairie Creek Greenway trail extension

In a recent Platte County Commission session, officials discussed a significant development aimed at enhancing pedestrian connectivity and expanding the local trail network. The commission is moving forward with a plan to connect the 7 Bridges neighborhood to the Prairie Creek Greenway Trail, addressing a growing need for safe and accessible pathways in the area.

The initiative stems from a memorandum of understanding with a developer, which outlines the construction of a roundabout at a key intersection on N Highway. This upgrade is crucial as the highway currently acts as a barrier for pedestrians. The roundabout will not only slow down traffic but also provide safer crossings, allowing residents to navigate between neighborhoods more easily.

In addition to the roundabout, the county plans to purchase a five-acre parcel of land south of the existing trailhead. This acquisition, valued at $270,000, will facilitate the extension of the Prairie Creek Greenway Trail and create a new trailhead park. The project aims to improve the overall trail experience and address previous issues with trail maintenance.

The funding for these developments will come from the county's parks and stormwater sales tax, ensuring that the community's investment directly supports local infrastructure improvements.
