New Oxford students raise over $60,000 during annual Mini Thon event

The Conewago Valley School District celebrated a remarkable achievement during its March 10th Board meeting, highlighting the success of its annual Mini-THON event. The initiative raised over $60,000, with students from both the Conewago Township and high school contributing significantly—over $40,000 combined. This fundraising effort showcases the community's commitment to supporting local causes, and the Board expressed pride in the students and teachers who made it possible.

In addition to the Mini-THON success, the meeting recognized several students for their athletic achievements. Bernie Holmes was honored as the Gettysburg Times Athlete of the Week, while Ethan Madrigal also received accolades for his performance in swimming. The Board acknowledged the accomplishments of various sports teams, including the boys' basketball team, which qualified for districts, and wrestlers who competed in the District 3 tournament.

The meeting also highlighted educational advancements, including a successful grant application that secured over $78,000 for the Career and Technical Center (CCTC). These funds will enhance the curriculum with new equipment for family consumer science classes. Furthermore, the district is expanding a literacy initiative that has shown promising results in kindergarten classrooms, aiming to improve reading skills among young students.

Community engagement was a key theme, with the Board thanking the Parent-Teacher Organization for organizing events like a student-teacher basketball game and a skate night. Additionally, local volunteers contributed their time to conduct mock interviews for personal finance students, providing valuable real-world experience.

As the meeting concluded, the Board reviewed the treasurer's report, which indicated a total of $54,158,483 across six accounts, reflecting the district's financial health. The discussions and decisions made during this meeting underscore the district's commitment to fostering student achievement and community involvement, setting a positive tone for future initiatives.
