Wausau City partners with Habitat for Humanity to build modular homes

The Wausau Economic Development Meeting held on March 4, 2025, highlighted an exciting partnership between the City of Wausau and Habitat for Humanity aimed at enhancing local housing options. The meeting focused on a proposal for Habitat for Humanity to purchase a modular home and place it on a city lot, utilizing Community Development Block Grant funds.

Tiffany Arnold, the Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity, presented the proposal, which emerged after the city’s initial bid for a modular home project fell through. The proposed site for the new home is located at 727 Jefferson Street, directly across from another Habitat home scheduled for construction this summer. This initiative aims to bring two new homes to the neighborhood by the end of the year, contributing to community revitalization efforts.

John Evans, the Board President of Habitat for Humanity, expressed gratitude towards the city for its ongoing support, noting that the organization has successfully built 75 homes, with 46 located in Wausau. He emphasized the financial benefits of placing homes on underutilized lots, which can generate tax revenue for the city.

Arnold further elaborated on the modular home options, mentioning that Habitat has explored various builders and is confident in meeting the timeline for the project. The collaboration is seen as a pilot program, with hopes of expanding future housing initiatives based on its success.

The meeting concluded with a sense of optimism about the partnership's potential to positively impact the community and address local housing needs.
