Montgomery celebrates groundbreaking for $94M Intermodal Container Transfer Facility

Montgomery City Council convened on March 4, 2025, to discuss several key initiatives aimed at enhancing the community's economic growth and cultural vibrancy. A highlight of the meeting was the announcement of the Montgomery Intermodal Container Transfer Facility (ICTF), a $94 million investment that promises to significantly boost the local economy. This project, in collaboration with the Alabama Port Authority and CSX, is expected to create over 1,400 jobs and attract more than $3 billion in investments, positioning Montgomery as a logistics hub in the Southeast.

In addition to economic developments, the council addressed housing needs in the area. The Montgomery Housing Authority has commenced construction on 60 new affordable housing units at Columbus Square, part of a larger $20.6 million project. This initiative aims to meet the growing demand for housing as the local economy expands, with completion anticipated by early 2026.

The meeting also marked the kickoff of the "Open on Dexter" initiative, a month-long celebration designed to revitalize Lower Dexter Avenue and Court Square. This event will feature pop-up shops, local cuisine, and live entertainment, fostering community engagement and supporting local businesses.

Furthermore, the council commemorated the upcoming 60th anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery voting rights march, highlighting the historical significance of this event. A series of activities, including a family fun day and a march retracing the steps of civil rights activists, are planned to honor the legacy of those who fought for justice.

Lastly, the council celebrated local athletic achievements, recognizing the success of Montgomery's high school basketball teams, including the Park Crossing Lady Thunderbirds, who secured their first state title, and the Trinity Presbyterian girls' team, which claimed its third consecutive championship.
