New Visions Home Services expands women’s outreach program for homeless support

In a recent City Council meeting held on December 16, 2024, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, significant discussions centered around community support services and urban development plans that aim to enhance the quality of life for residents.

One of the key highlights was the approval of funding for New Visions Home Services, which aims to expand its outreach to women experiencing homelessness. John Miller, the Chief Operating Officer, reported that last year, the organization served 264 individuals and noted a concerning trend: an increase in the number of women facing homelessness. To address this, the organization plans to dedicate Wednesdays specifically to women's services, partnering with local organizations like the Phoenix House to provide housing navigation and support. This initiative is particularly crucial as many of these women have histories of domestic violence and are considered more vulnerable within the community. The addition of laundry facilities and other wraparound services is also planned to better support these individuals.

The council also discussed the approval of the fiscal year 2026 through 2030 capital improvement plan, which outlines various projects aimed at enhancing city infrastructure and services. This plan is seen as a living document that will be updated regularly to reflect the community's evolving needs.

Additionally, the council approved the final plat for two new residential subdivisions: Whispering Oaks Phase 4, which includes 48 lots, and Whispering Oaks Phase 5, a mixed-use development with three lots. These developments are expected to contribute to the city's growth and provide more housing options for residents.

The meeting concluded with a focus on ensuring that the city continues to adapt and respond to the needs of its community, particularly in terms of housing and support services.
