City updates Roseville Road Shelter progress and plans for tiny home replacements

City officials acknowledged the ongoing efforts of social and healthcare workers at the March 4 City Council meeting, emphasizing the importance of their roles in addressing homelessness in Sacramento. Council members recognized the often thankless work done by these teams, who engage directly with individuals living in encampments to connect them with essential services.

A significant focus of the meeting was the Roseville Road Shelter, where officials provided updates on infrastructure challenges, particularly regarding electricity and heating for temporary housing units. The city has faced delays in obtaining necessary electrical equipment, with a backlog of four to six months for transformers needed to power the shelter's facilities.

In the interim, officials opted to prioritize getting individuals off the streets by deploying pallet homes and trailers, despite safety concerns regarding the older FEMA trailers currently in use. The city is in the process of upgrading these trailers, but the costs associated with making them safe and functional are high. Instead, plans are underway to replace the aging trailers with 35 new tiny homes, which will be equipped with proper electrical systems.

City representatives assured the public that they are actively working to address these issues, coordinating with local utility providers to expedite electrification efforts. They also highlighted the availability of blankets and climate-controlled spaces for shelter residents during this transitional period.
