Lexington committee unveils design for Lewis and Harriet Hayden memorial

In a recent meeting of the Lexington Public Arts Commission, significant strides were made towards the development of a memorial dedicated to Lewis and Harriet Hayden, prominent figures in the Underground Railroad. The project, spearheaded by the commission and designed by TSW Architects, aims to create a space that is not only a monument but also an educational and contemplative site for the community.

Chairman Larry Kiesel expressed his enthusiasm for the project, highlighting the collaborative effort with TSW Architects, who are providing their services pro bono. Samantha Castro, a representative from TSW, presented the conceptual design, which is intended to be completed in time for Juneteenth celebrations. The memorial will be located at the intersection of North Limestone and Fourth Street, a site chosen for its historical significance and visibility.

The design features a statue by artist Basil Watson, which will be positioned to face north, symbolizing the route taken by those escaping slavery. The memorial will include a timeline etched into the ground, detailing the history of Lexington and the Haydens' contributions to the abolitionist movement. Additional elements such as a story wall and donor recognition features are also planned, enhancing the educational aspect of the site.

Commission members expressed their excitement about the project, noting its potential to serve as a gathering place for local schools and the community. The design aims to create an inviting atmosphere, with landscaping that includes low-maintenance plants and a "learning lawn" for educational activities.

As the project progresses, the commission is working closely with the artist to finalize the statue's placement and ensure the memorial's stability. The discussions during the meeting underscored the importance of this memorial not only as a tribute to the Haydens but also as a vital educational resource for future generations.
