Piedmont Natural Gas plans gas distribution line expansion for schools and prison

In a recent meeting held on March 3, 2025, the Greene County Board of Commissioners gathered to discuss significant developments regarding the expansion of gas distribution lines by Piedmont Natural Gas. The meeting, attended by various stakeholders, including representatives from DESI Incorporated, highlighted the ongoing efforts to extend gas services to key locations, including a new high school and a nearby prison.

Damian Gomez, a representative from DESI, explained that the project aims to enhance gas accessibility for residents and businesses along the route. He detailed the two-phase plan: the first phase focuses on supplying gas to the new high school, while the second phase will extend the lines to the prison. This initiative not only promises to benefit these institutions but also offers residents the opportunity to connect to the new gas lines.

A crucial point of discussion was the need for temporary construction agreements due to specific deed restrictions that affect land ownership along the proposed gas line route. Gomez noted that some property deeds indicate ownership extends to the center line of the road, which complicates the installation process. To address this, Piedmont Natural Gas has secured the necessary permits from the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) and is seeking agreements to facilitate construction in these areas.

As part of the outreach, the company is offering compensation of $250 to property owners affected by the project, including five tracks owned by the county. This gesture aims to foster goodwill and ensure that any concerns from landowners are addressed proactively. Gomez emphasized the importance of communication with local stakeholders, including educational institutions, to mitigate any potential disruptions during construction.

The meeting also touched on logistical aspects, such as the depth at which the gas lines will be buried and the methods of installation, which may vary depending on the terrain. Gomez assured attendees that all necessary notifications would be sent to property owners and neighboring residents before any work begins.

As the meeting concluded, the Board of Commissioners expressed their support for the project, recognizing its potential to enhance infrastructure and provide essential services to the community.
