Gainesville Fire Department honors outstanding officers and lifesaving crews

During the recent City Council voting meeting on February 4, 2025, the Gainesville community came together to honor the exceptional service of its firefighters. The meeting highlighted several awards recognizing the dedication and bravery of local fire department personnel, showcasing their vital role in ensuring public safety.

The ceremony began with the presentation of the Fire Officer of the Year award, which was awarded to Ryan Stamey. Stamey was recognized for his exemplary leadership both in the station and during emergency responses, earning the respect of his peers. Following him, Chris Fairholt received the Firefighter of the Year award for his unwavering commitment to the department, consistently arriving early and leaving last, while always offering help with a positive attitude.

Two lifesaving awards were also presented to members of Station 2. The first went to Ivy Kennedy and Carson Harrell for their quick response to an elderly woman who suffered a cardiac arrest at a local business. Their prompt actions were credited with saving her life, as she was later able to leave the hospital after receiving a pacemaker. The second lifesaving award recognized the efforts of Station 2 C shift personnel, who provided critical care to a woman injured in a boating accident on Lake Lanier. Their swift application of trauma care was praised by medical professionals for its role in her recovery.

Additionally, the newly established Dan and Henry award was presented to Mitch Stevens, honoring his selfless service and dedication over 27 years without seeking recognition. The Valor Award was given to firefighter Will Hubley, who heroically rescued a driver from a burning vehicle after a head-on collision.

City officials expressed their gratitude for the firefighters' contributions, emphasizing the importance of their work in the community. The council acknowledged that the firefighters often respond to medical emergencies, playing a crucial role in stabilizing patients before they reach the hospital.

The meeting underscored the city’s commitment to supporting its fire department and highlighted the profound impact these individuals have on the safety and well-being of Gainesville residents.
