The Torrance Fire Department is ramping up its training efforts with a focus on preparing recruits and seasoned firefighters for real-world emergencies. Currently, nine new recruits are undergoing rigorous physical training at the drill tower, engaging in job-related exercises that simulate the demands of firefighting. These recruits are tested on various skills, including hose pulling, climbing towers, and using tools like axes and sledgehammers, all while wearing gear that can weigh up to 80 pounds.

In addition to training new firefighters, the department is also conducting its annual Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) training. This critical exercise, held once or twice a year, prepares firefighters for large-scale emergencies such as traffic accidents, shootings, and natural disasters. The training involves collaboration with other agencies, including the Torrance Police Department, to ensure a coordinated response during actual incidents.

Firefighters practice managing multiple patients, learning to efficiently transport them to hospitals while ensuring their safety.
