Roseburg EDC approves grants for Lavender Festival and Blocktoberfest funding

The Roseburg Economic Development Commission (EDC) made significant strides in supporting local events and businesses during their meeting on January 23, 2025. A key decision was the approval of a $6,500 grant to the Growing Miracles Lavender Garden for their eighth annual Lavender Festival, which has seen substantial growth over the years, attracting 15,000 attendees and 80 local vendors last year. The funding will aid in creating promotional materials and digital advertising, helping to draw even more visitors from across the region.

In contrast, the EDC declined a $7,500 funding request from a startup wine tour business. The commission emphasized that the tourism grant funding is intended for broader marketing of tourism-related activities rather than individual businesses. They encouraged the applicant to seek assistance from local organizations like the Umqua Valley Wine Growers Association to help establish their business.

Another request for funding from a vacation rental owner for a Roseburg wine and outdoor adventure initiative was also denied. The EDC noted that the proposal overlapped with existing initiatives and reiterated the importance of promoting collective tourism efforts rather than individual ventures.

The commission did approve funding for the NeighborWorks Umqua's Blocktoberfest, allocating $7,499 to support advertising for this growing event, which aims to showcase the downtown area and attract visitors. Additionally, they supported a $7,500 grant for the Douglas County Fairgrounds to rebuild their website, enhancing digital outreach and promoting year-round events.

The Douglas County Museum Foundation received approval for $7,499 to repair the roof of their historic railroad depot, contingent on securing additional funding and necessary permits. However, a second request for $5,000 to market a new rail car exhibit was not approved, as the exhibit is not yet complete.

These decisions reflect the EDC's commitment to fostering community events and supporting local tourism while ensuring that funding is allocated effectively to benefit the broader Roseburg area. The commission's focus on collaborative efforts and strategic marketing initiatives is expected to enhance the region's appeal to visitors and stimulate economic growth.
