The Planning Commission of Woodside convened on February 26, 2025, to discuss significant revisions to the municipal code aimed at facilitating the construction of Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) within the town. The meeting primarily focused on proposed changes that would allow for greater flexibility in ADU construction, particularly concerning the conversion of existing barns and height limitations.
During the session, the commission reviewed public comments and previous discussions from a study session held in June 2024, which highlighted the need for updated regulations to align with evolving state laws regarding ADUs. These state laws have become increasingly permissive, mandating local jurisdictions to approve certain types of ADUs, including those that can be converted from existing structures.

This change would enable structures larger than 1,500 square feet to be repurposed without altering their original size or location, while still maintaining the rural character of the area.
Additionally, the commission proposed adjustments to height restrictions for ADUs, particularly on downsloping hillside lots. The new regulations would permit the downslope side of an ADU to exceed the current height limits, provided it does not surpass 28 feet overall. This change aims to accommodate the unique challenges of constructing on sloped terrain.
The commission also considered allowing ADUs with shed roofs to have a higher plate height on one side, reflecting a popular architectural style. Furthermore, a provision was introduced to permit one ADU per property that is 800 square feet or less without specific plate height requirements, as long as the overall height remains under 16 feet.
The Planning Commission is expected to adopt a resolution recommending these changes to the Town Council for further action. This initiative reflects Woodside's commitment to increasing ADU production and adapting local regulations to meet state mandates, ultimately supporting housing development in the community.
