The City of Soledad is taking significant steps to promote community engagement and environmental responsibility through its recent citywide garage sale and cleanup events. During a special city council meeting on October 23, 2024, Tri Cities Disposal and Recycling's Special Projects Consultant, Mauritree Levin, presented the outcomes and benefits of these initiatives, which have become vital to the community.

Levin emphasized that these events serve multiple purposes, including preventing illegal dumping, reducing waste, and encouraging recycling. The city hosts these events twice a year, in spring and fall, to help residents declutter their homes while promoting sustainable practices. The garage sales not only allow residents to sell unwanted items but also foster a sense of community as neighbors come together to participate.

The recent cleanup event was particularly successful, with 250 vehicles participating and a remarkable 63% diversion rate of materials from landfills. This means that a significant portion of the collected waste was either recycled or donated, showcasing the community's commitment to environmental stewardship. In total, 28 tons of material were processed, including 12 cubic yards of clothing and household items, which were redirected to support local charities.

Levin also highlighted the importance of education and outreach during these events. By providing a platform for residents to learn about proper waste disposal and recycling practices, the city is fostering a culture of sustainability. The collaboration with South County Animal Rescue for donations further illustrates the community's dedication to supporting local organizations while promoting responsible waste management.
