The Roseburg Public Library is thriving, with a reported 3% increase in total circulation over the past year, driven by a notable 8% rise in digital checkouts. During the Roseburg City Council meeting on October 14, 2024, library officials highlighted these impressive statistics, emphasizing their commitment to literacy and lifelong learning.
Library Director Chris shared that the library now boasts 82,000 items, including 4,500 new additions, primarily books. Youth materials accounted for 58% of all checkouts, reflecting the library's focus on early literacy and youth engagement. The library's digital offerings have expanded with the addition of electronic magazines, which are expected to further boost digital circulation.
The library's outreach efforts have also paid off, with 1,800 new library cards issued in 2023, including over 1,000 student cards. This initiative aims to provide free access to resources for children and teens in the Roseburg School District, fostering a love for reading from an early age.
In addition to circulation statistics, the library reported an 18% increase in visits, attributed to community programs and a welcoming environment. With 34 hours of public access each week, the library continues to serve as a vital community hub.
Chris also acknowledged the significant role of grants and community support, with $63,000 received in grants during the fiscal year, which help fund various programs and initiatives. Volunteers contribute over 3,000 hours annually, further enhancing library services.
Looking ahead, the library plans to introduce new programs, including a special exhibition on the Americans and the Holocaust, and continue expanding its digital resources. The library remains dedicated to meeting the literacy and learning needs of the Roseburg community, ensuring that it remains a cherished resource for all ages.
