Construction plans unveiled for new classrooms at 520 Thayer Drive site

The Richland Planning Commission meeting on February 26, 2025, focused on the proposed expansion of a local educational facility, which includes the construction of six new classrooms. The plan involves leveling the existing parsonage at 518 Thayer Drive while retaining the basement to create a new foundation. Three classrooms will be built on the site of the parsonage, with an additional three classrooms planned for vacant land to the south.

The expansion will also feature essential facilities, including an office, a teacher workroom, a nurse's station, and restrooms for both adults and children. A janitor's room and an electrical room are also part of the design, along with an entrance to a fenced playground.

During the presentation, the layout of the property was discussed, highlighting the 3.25 acres of residential land and 0.73 acres designated for parks and public facilities. The design includes a traffic flow plan, which aims to streamline vehicle movement around the site. The proposed traffic flow will be one-directional, allowing vehicles to enter through the existing driveway and navigate around a loop for drop-off and exit.

Concerns were raised regarding the traffic flow, particularly at the south entrance off Thayer Drive. Some commission members expressed confusion about potential conflicts between vehicles entering the drop-off lane and those navigating the loop. The commission is considering adjustments to ensure safety and efficiency for both pedestrians and vehicles.

The meeting concluded with a commitment to address the traffic flow concerns and finalize the plans for the expansion, which aims to enhance educational facilities in the Richland area. Further discussions will be held to refine the proposal and ensure community needs are met.
