Miami Dade plans first US bus rapid transit system with gate arms for safety

Miami-Dade County's Citizens' Independent Transportation Trust convened on February 26, 2025, to discuss significant advancements in local transportation infrastructure, particularly focusing on the development of new parking facilities and safety enhancements for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system.

A key highlight from the meeting was the introduction of innovative safety measures for the BRT system, including the installation of experimental gate arms at intersections. These gate arms will allow buses to pass through intersections at speeds of up to 35 miles per hour while ensuring safety by preemptively stopping cross traffic. This initiative marks the first implementation of such technology in the United States, pending further approval from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) after a six-month operational study.

The meeting also covered updates on several parking garage projects aimed at improving commuter access. The 16160 Eighth Street parking garage is nearing completion, with an expected opening in August 2025. This facility will feature 644 parking spaces, public restrooms, bike storage, and electric vehicle charging stations, funded through a combination of federal, state, and local sources totaling nearly $58 million.

Additionally, plans for a new parking facility at 260 Fourth Street were discussed, with a budget of over $1 million supported by state and federal grants. The project is set to begin planning in the first quarter of 2025, with construction anticipated to start later that year.

The Quail Roost project was also highlighted, which will provide 261 new transit parking spaces and is currently 94% complete, with final construction expected by fall 2025. This project is part of a larger development that includes affordable housing, showcasing a commitment to integrating transit solutions with community needs.
