The Oregon State Legislature's House Committee on Economic Development, Small Business, and Trade convened on February 26, 2025, to spotlight the burgeoning trade relationship between Oregon and Mexico. Consul of Mexico in Portland, who addressed the committee, emphasized the remarkable growth in trade, which surged from $1.3 billion in 2020 to an impressive $7.1 billion in 2024. This partnership now supports approximately 69,000 jobs across various sectors in Oregon.
The consul highlighted that Mexico has evolved from being Oregon's ninth largest trade partner to its second largest, underscoring the significance of this economic alliance. He noted that trade is not merely about numbers but about fostering shared prosperity and community connections. The consul also pointed out that tourism plays a vital role in this relationship, with direct flights between Portland and Guadalajara serving as a critical link for both business and leisure travelers.
In a bid to further enhance these ties, the Port of Portland is prioritizing the establishment of a direct flight to Mexico City, which would bolster trade and tourism opportunities. The consul also mentioned that many Oregonians are choosing Mexico as a retirement destination, attracted by its quality of life and affordability.
A proposed unified trade strategy for Oregon aims to align efforts among various stakeholders, including the Oregon Business Development Department and Business Oregon, to maximize trade and tourism opportunities with Mexico and other partners. This initiative reflects Oregon's commitment to expanding its economic cooperation with Mexico, which is not only a top export destination but also a strategic ally in the global market.
