Nutley students earn prestigious arts and robotics accolades at state competitions

Nutley Public School District celebrated remarkable achievements in the arts and athletics during the recent Board of Education meeting. The spotlight shone brightly on choir student government president Alexis Hamlin, who has been honored with the prestigious 2025 New Jersey Governor's Award in Arts Education for Vocal Music. This accolade, awarded by the New Jersey Music Educators Association, is the highest honor a high school student can achieve in the arts, both statewide and nationally. Alexis is not only one of only four vocal music recipients in New Jersey but also makes history as the first student from Nutley to receive this esteemed recognition. She will be formally acknowledged in May for her outstanding contributions to arts education.

In addition to Alexis's achievement, art student Zayil Leon received the Silver Key Award for her mixed media piece, "In Pursuit of Desire," as part of the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers' Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. This program has recognized many notable artists and writers, and Zayil joins the ranks of celebrated alumni.

The meeting also highlighted the success of the Nutley robotics team, which placed third out of 21 teams in a recent competition, marking their best performance to date.

In athletics, the winter season has been fruitful, with several notable achievements. The meeting acknowledged coach Bob Harvison, who celebrated his final home game, thanking him for his years of dedication and mentorship to student athletes.

These accomplishments reflect the vibrant talent and commitment within the Nutley school community, setting a high standard for future endeavors.
