Effingham Unit #40 Board of Education is set to enhance its dual credit program through a new agreement with Lakeland College, promising significant benefits for students and the district. During the recent board meeting, officials highlighted that the college will no longer charge tuition for dual credit classes that align with specific pathways toward degrees, marking a substantial cost-saving measure for the district.
This initiative aims to create a more intentional and purposeful dual credit environment, with Lakeland providing dedicated guidance counselors to assist students in navigating their options. The agreement also includes a "first right of refusal" clause, ensuring that the district consults Lakeland before seeking dual credit opportunities elsewhere.
In addition to financial savings, students enrolled in these dual credit classes will have the chance to earn tuition waivers of up to $500 for future semesters at Lakeland, along with recognition for their achievements during graduation. This move not only reduces costs but also fosters a stronger connection between high school students and their potential college pathways.
The board emphasized the importance of this agreement, noting that it allows for a more streamlined approach to dual credit education while enhancing student recognition and support. As the district moves forward, the anticipated outcomes include increased enrollment in dual credit courses and improved college readiness among students.
