The Jonesboro Public Safety Council Committee convened on February 24, 2025, to discuss a significant new project aimed at enhancing safety at train crossings in the city. The meeting focused on the implementation of an information system designed to inform motorists about the status of train crossings before they arrive.
The project, presented by Craig, involves the installation of sensors at various crossings, including Henson Road, Dan Avenue, and G Street. Additionally, digital message boards will be placed at key intersections, such as Johnson Avenue and Main Street, to alert drivers when a crossing is closed due to train activity. This system aims to improve response times for emergency services by notifying 911 dispatchers of closed crossings, allowing them to direct resources more effectively.
The initiative is a five-year demonstration project in collaboration with the Arkansas Department of Transportation (RDOT), with no financial burden on the city beyond the initial installation and ongoing maintenance of the equipment. The system will also feature beacons on Stadium Boulevard to indicate the status of crossings at Nettleton Avenue and Veil Circle.
During the discussion, it was clarified that the system would inform drivers when train gates are down, indicating that a train is crossing. There are plans for the system to provide updates on when a crossing will reopen, potentially offering time estimates of two to five minutes.
After addressing questions from the committee and the public, the council proceeded to a voice vote on the project, signaling a step forward in enhancing public safety at train crossings in Jonesboro. The meeting concluded without further public inquiries, marking a productive session focused on community safety improvements.
