A North Dakota veteran's heroic sacrifice during World War II is set to be honored with a proposed naming of a highway in his memory. Henry Gerke, who served as a Marine in the Solomon Islands, threw himself on a grenade to save a fellow soldier, ensuring the success of their mission. This act of bravery earned him the Medal of Honor and a battleship named after him, the USS Gerke, which is currently decommissioned.
During a recent Senate Transportation meeting, Representative Munson highlighted Gerke's story, emphasizing the desire of the Nitschee community to name a stretch of Highway 18, which runs from Highway 5 to the Canadian border, in his honor. Munson noted that many residents were unaware of Gerke's legacy and expressed the importance of keeping his memory alive.
The proposal aims to recognize Gerke not only for his valor but also to inspire future generations about the sacrifices made by veterans. Munson mentioned that he had previously suggested Gerke for the Teddy Roosevelt award, acknowledging the competition from other notable figures but underscoring the significance of honoring local heroes.
As discussions continue, the committee is expected to consider the proposal further, with hopes that this tribute will bring greater awareness to Gerke's remarkable story and the sacrifices of veterans in North Dakota.
