Los Angeles declares June 15 as Justice for Janitors Day to honor immigrant workers

The Los Angeles City Council made a powerful statement during their recent meeting, officially declaring June 15, 2001, as "Justice for Janitors Day." This resolution honors the 16-year legacy of the Justice for Janitors movement, which has fought tirelessly for the rights and dignity of janitorial workers across the nation.

Council member Nick Pacheco led the charge, emphasizing the movement's historical significance and its ongoing struggle against exploitation. He highlighted the brutal events of June 15, 1999, when janitors and their supporters faced violence while advocating for their right to organize. "The Just for Janitors have served as examples to all immigrant workers that if they dare to organize, they too can build a better life for themselves and their communities," Pacheco stated.

The resolution not only celebrates past achievements but also addresses current challenges faced by immigrant workers. This year's Justice for Janitors Day is dedicated to advocating for new legalization measures to protect undocumented workers, who are crucial to the economy yet often vulnerable to exploitation.

Mike Garcia, representing SEIU Local 18, expressed gratitude for the council's support, stating, "We wouldn't have achieved it without the support of city council and politicians such as yourselves." He called on community members to join the upcoming event at Pershing Square, urging collective action for the rights of undocumented workers.
