High school welcomes Nigerian dwarf goats Ben and Jerry to courtyard community

The Tunkhannock Area School District's recent school board meeting highlighted an exciting new addition to the community: two Nigerian dwarf goats named Ben and Jerry. These goats, along with a group of egg-laying chickens known as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, will reside in the school’s courtyards, providing a unique opportunity for students to engage with animals as part of their educational experience.

Assistant Principal Britney Wood introduced Ben and Jerry, noting their popularity among students and staff since their arrival. The goats are cared for daily by the Future Farmers of America Club, which emphasizes the school’s commitment to agricultural education and hands-on learning. Wood humorously mentioned that the goats have even made a few visits to her office, showcasing their friendly nature.

Currently, Ben and Jerry require special attention, as they are still young and need to be bottle-fed. Wood takes them home each night to ensure they are well cared for until they can safely stay in the courtyard. The community is invited to meet these new furry friends, fostering a sense of connection and excitement among students and staff alike.

This initiative not only enriches the school environment but also supports the district's broader goals of enhancing student engagement and promoting agricultural education.
