Lewis County officials have taken significant steps to enhance local services and infrastructure during their recent legislative committee meeting held on February 1, 2025. Key decisions made during the meeting are set to impact cybersecurity, transportation, and community development.

The committee authorized a three-year agreement with Shy International for Fortinet software licensing, ensuring robust cybersecurity measures for the county at a cost not to exceed $75,000. This investment, approved in the 2025 capital improvement plan, aims to protect county systems from potential cyber threats.

In a move to facilitate land ownership, the committee approved the transfer of approximately 0.44 acres of vacant land to residents David C. Hodge and Michelle L. Smith for $4,000. This transfer is subject to specific deed restrictions and will incur costs related to the title transfer, which the owners will cover.

Transportation improvements were also a focal point, with the planning and community development department authorized to submit multiple funding requests. These include a request to the New York State Department of Transportation for a wheelchair van, a 16-passenger bus, and various bus stop enhancements, totaling an estimated cost of $500,000. Additionally, a grant application for $500,000 to the New York State DEC aims to support the installation of electric vehicle charging stations.

The committee also moved forward with digital initiatives, approving a $15,995 agreement with General Code LLC to digitize local laws, enhancing accessibility for residents. Furthermore, a grant application for up to $2 million under the New York State ConnectALL program was authorized to expand the county's free public Wi-Fi services.

Other notable decisions included the submission of grant applications for road improvements and vehicle infrastructure, as well as the acceptance of a proposal for vehicle camera systems to enhance safety within the county fleet.
