Sedgwick County employees promote unity and Black History awareness

In a recent meeting, Sedgwick County officials introduced the Unity Collective, a new initiative aimed at fostering inclusivity and understanding within the county's workforce and the broader community. This initiative, launched in celebration of Black History Month, emphasizes the importance of recognizing the contributions of Black individuals throughout history while also addressing contemporary issues of equity and representation.

The Unity Collective, comprised of 14 employees from various departments, seeks to create a culture of unity within the organization. Members highlighted the significance of open dialogue, stating that everyone is entitled to their opinions and thoughts. They emphasized the importance of feeling heard and seen, which is crucial for fostering a sense of belonging among employees and, by extension, the community they serve.

The collective aims to reflect the diverse voices of Sedgwick County's population, which exceeds half a million residents. By doing so, they believe they can enhance government services and better meet the needs of the community. As part of their efforts for Black History Month, the Unity Collective plans to share resources, including videos showcasing Black artists, musicians, and historical figures, to promote understanding and appreciation of different cultures.

The discussions during the meeting underscored a commitment to treating everyone with dignity, respect, and love. Members expressed pride in their heritage and the resilience of their ancestors, viewing their work as a contribution to a more equitable future.
