Santa Maria honors 28th annual holiday lights contest winners and announces upcoming market

In the heart of Santa Maria, the city council meeting on December 17, 2024, sparkled with holiday cheer as the annual "Lights, Sights, and Holiday Nights" award winners were celebrated. The atmosphere was filled with excitement as Mayor Posada opened the event, reflecting on the tradition that began nearly three decades ago to honor residents who transform their homes into festive displays.

As the evening unfolded, the council recognized the creativity and effort of local families and businesses that participated in this year’s decorating contest. The Vargas and Meza family at 1319 North College Drive took home the award for the best use of lights, while the Castillo family at 125 West McElhinney Avenue was honored for the best lawn design. The Great family at 804 North College Drive won for the best holiday theme, and the Village Town Homes at 1001 West Cook Street received accolades for the best business display.

The highlight of the night was the announcement of the best overall winner, the Cosmala family at 801 South Miller Street, who were also inducted into the Hall of Fame for their consistent participation over the years. The Hall of Fame also welcomed several other families, including the Dickersons and the Bernard family, recognizing their dedication to spreading holiday joy through their decorations.

In addition to the awards, the council shared details about an upcoming holiday market scheduled for December 21 at Machado Plaza, promising a festive evening filled with crafts, campfires, and activities for children. Although the city trolley tours of the decorated homes were sold out, maps were made available for residents eager to explore the dazzling displays.

As the meeting concluded, Mayor Posada expressed gratitude to the community for their participation and the spirit of togetherness that the holiday season brings. The event not only highlighted the creativity of Santa Maria's residents but also reinforced the importance of community engagement during this festive time of year.
