Kiwanis to Display Flags Year-Round in Grosse Ile for Veterans Day

The Grosse Ile Township Community Recreation Commission convened on February 6, 2025, to discuss various community initiatives and updates. The meeting began with a report from Commission member Keith, who shared that the Kiwanis Club conducted a survey among 550 flag subscribers. The results indicated a strong preference for displaying American flags year-round, with over 75% of respondents in favor. As a result, flags will be displayed from Armed Forces Day on May 17 through Veterans Day on November 11, with funds raised supporting local youth programs.

Marissa provided an update on the new resident welcome baskets, noting that deliveries were underway despite inclement weather. Over 20 local businesses and organizations participated in this initiative, which has been well-received by new residents. Marissa encouraged any new residents who had not yet received a basket to contact the recreation office.

Stacy expressed gratitude for the Grosse Ile High School jazz band’s recent performance, highlighting their involvement in the upcoming Island Fest, where they will perform mini band sessions. The commission discussed the importance of engaging local students in community events.

Student liaison Emma reported on school activities, including the conclusion of exams and upcoming events such as a Valentine's Day bake sale and a spring musical. Alex, another student liaison, shared details about new clubs at the middle school and the high school’s Opportunity Night for eighth graders.

Wendy acknowledged National School Counseling Week and welcomed a new counselor at the high school. She also outlined various after-school programs being offered, including theater arts and fitness classes, aimed at enhancing student engagement.

The meeting concluded with a reminder about the upcoming garage sale scheduled for May 20-21, 2025, and a note of appreciation for community support during recent weather challenges. The next commission meeting is set for March 6, 2025.
