Abilene's Parks and Recreation department is making significant strides this winter, with key projects aimed at enhancing community facilities and activities. The recent meeting highlighted the successful remodeling of the concession stand at Wheelchair ball fields, which had suffered from water heater issues and flooding. The water heater has now been relocated downstairs, ensuring the concession stand is fully operational again.
In addition to the concession stand, the department has focused on playground maintenance, notably repairing the popular spinner at Red Bud Park. Over the winter, the team logged an impressive 2,453 labor hours across 173 work orders, completing two special projects and continuing work on several others, including new park signs.
On the senior activities front, the introduction of a new adult coloring club has sparked interest, with various coloring tools being utilized. The upcoming walking soccer program aims to promote exercise in a fun, non-competitive environment. The recent daddy-daughter dance at the Expo Center was a hit, selling 699 tickets and creating cherished memories for families.
The Abilene Zoo also reported exciting developments, including the birth of a porcupette and a Steenbok baby, as well as the addition of a female bison named Leoty to the zoo's family. Upcoming events like Wild Days promise engaging experiences for visitors, allowing them to interact with animals.
Overall, the Parks and Recreation department is actively working to enhance community engagement and enjoyment, with a variety of projects and events that cater to all ages.
