Warren County develops Veterans Justice Court to support veterans' mental health needs

The Washington County Board of Supervisors' Health/Human Services Committee meeting on January 29, 2025, highlighted significant initiatives aimed at supporting local veterans. A key focus was the ongoing success of the peer-to-peer breakfast program, now hosted at the Hudson Falls American Legion, which has attracted around 60 veterans and their families. This program, which offers free meals, aims to foster community engagement and increase traffic to local VFWs and American Legions, which are struggling to remain open.

The committee also discussed the development of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Vietnam Veterans of America to take over their annual ceremony on May 30 at SUNY Adirondack. This initiative is crucial for honoring Vietnam veterans, many of whom faced significant challenges upon returning home from service.

Another major topic was the establishment of a Veterans Justice Court in Warren County, set to launch in March. This court will provide an alternative sentencing option for veterans dealing with mental health and substance abuse issues. The program aims to support veterans through the legal process, offering mentorship and guidance to help them navigate their challenges and potentially have charges dropped upon successful completion of required counseling.
