North Star Promise scholarship empowers students to pursue higher education goals

In a vibrant meeting room filled with the echoes of ambition and determination, students from across Minnesota gathered to share their stories with the Committee on Higher Education. One poignant testimony came from a senior at Metro State University, who recounted her journey through the educational system. She began her academic career at a Galtier magnet school, where she excelled in the Gifted and Talented program, much to her parents' pride. Her passion for learning propelled her into advanced placement English in high school, setting the stage for her college aspirations. However, the path was not without obstacles. Despite her hard work and dedication, balancing a full-time job with a demanding course load took a toll on her mental and physical health.

Now in her senior year, she credits the North Star Promise scholarship for making her education possible. Without it, she expressed that her dreams of completing a bachelor's degree in public relations and eventually pursuing a master's in nursing would remain out of reach. “Income should not determine whether a student can get an education,” she urged, emphasizing the importance of preserving such scholarships for future generations.

Following her, Hans Arvidsson Hicks, a junior at Metro State, shared his own educational journey. After transferring between colleges and facing the challenges of online learning during the pandemic, he found his footing at Metro State. His newfound motivation stemmed from connecting with the science faculty and engaging in hands-on experiences in the lab. Now pursuing a degree in biochemistry, he expressed gratitude for the support he received, which has helped him clarify his career goals in agribusiness and plant genetics.
