Michele Uva, UEFA's Director of Sustainability, announced a bold commitment to the "Football for the Goals" initiative during a recent government meeting. Since becoming the first signatory in July 2022, UEFA has positioned itself at the forefront of integrating sustainability within the global football community.
Uva emphasized the importance of collaboration, stating that the initiative serves as a vital tool for creating synergy among stakeholders worldwide. With football boasting a staggering 3 billion fans, UEFA aims to leverage this platform to promote the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across the sport.
"Our three main goals are transparency, commitment, and engagement," Uva declared, highlighting UEFA's strategy that encompasses 11 policies—seven focused on human rights and four on environmental issues. He stressed that these policies are interconnected, fostering positive behaviors within the football ecosystem.
The overarching aim is to not only enhance the sport but also to make a significant impact on civil society. Uva's vision for a sustainable future in football is clear: by engaging the entire football family, UEFA hopes to lead the charge in addressing social trends and environmental challenges. As the initiative progresses, the football community is poised to play a crucial role in shaping a better future for both the sport and society at large.
