San Francisco's city commissioners took significant steps towards enhancing shelter services for the homeless during their recent meeting on February 14, 2025. The commission approved a new contract agreement with We Hope, aimed at providing essential shelter and support services at a new facility known as The Commons, set to open in the Bayview Hunters Point neighborhood.
The contract, which spans from March 3, 2024, to March 31, 2027, is budgeted at nearly $9.82 million, funded through a combination of state and local resources. This includes 54% from state behavioral health bridge housing funding, 30% from the state encampment resolution fund, and 16% from local funding sources. The Commons will feature a hybrid shelter model, comprising 60 cabins and 20 RV spaces, accommodating up to 98 guests in total. This initiative aims to address the urgent need for additional shelter capacity in District 10, providing a low-barrier environment for adults experiencing homelessness.
During the meeting, public comments highlighted ongoing concerns regarding the treatment of residents at the Mission Inn, with a speaker urging the commission to investigate reported abuse and misconduct. The commission acknowledged these concerns and committed to looking into the matter.
The approval of the We Hope contract marks a pivotal moment in San Francisco's efforts to improve its homeless services, offering a range of amenities including medical support, meals, and case management. As the city moves forward with this initiative, it aims to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for its most vulnerable residents.
