The Pleasanton Civic Arts Commission has taken a significant step forward in honoring local music pioneer Don Lewis by approving the installation of two sonographic art sculptures at Daluke Park. This decision, made during the commission's regular meeting on January 6, 2025, comes after a previous discussion on November 15, where the artistic merit and site for the sculptures were evaluated.
Don Lewis, a resident of Pleasanton and founder of the "Say Yes to Music" initiative, was a notable figure in the music industry, collaborating with renowned artists such as Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones. The sculptures aim to celebrate his contributions to music and the synthesizer, with one piece depicting Lewis himself and another representing a conductor.
The estimated installation costs for the sculptures range between $12,000 and $20,000. Although funding has not yet been secured, the commission decided to proceed with the approval to ensure that the project continues without delay. They expressed confidence in their ability to raise the necessary funds, emphasizing the importance of timely installation to avoid increased costs in the future.
Next steps include receiving renderings from the selected artists, after which the project will return to the commission for further review. This initiative not only honors a local legend but also enhances the cultural landscape of Pleasanton, promising to enrich the community's artistic offerings.
