Shawnee County Commissioners approve resolutions for industrial bonds and social services allocations

Shawnee County's Board of County Commissioners held a special meeting on December 30, 2024, to finalize year-end business and approve several key resolutions and contracts that will impact the community in 2025.

One of the most significant decisions made during the meeting was the approval of a resolution to issue taxable industrial revenue bonds for Silesen and Sons Inc., amounting to $2 million. This project aims to establish a facility for traffic control projects, which is expected to create jobs and enhance local infrastructure. The board also approved a resolution for Union Development Holdings LLC to issue $65 million in bonds for a mixed-income housing project, which will include 101 one-bedroom units, 84 two-bedroom units, and 66 three-bedroom units. This initiative is part of a broader effort to address housing needs in the area.

In financial matters, the commissioners approved a series of voucher payments totaling over $3 million, which included significant expenditures for solid waste management and repairs to a detention facility. Additionally, a new insurance contract with Alliant Insurance Services was authorized, reflecting a modest rate increase of just 0.46%, a notable achievement in the current economic climate.

The meeting also addressed public safety and community services. The board approved funding allocations for various social service programs, including $40,000 for community resources and $108,000 for the Shawnee County Fair Association. Furthermore, a request to fill a vacant shift supervisor position in the Sheriff's Office was approved, ensuring continued effective management of emergency communications.

In a move to enhance local recreational facilities, the commissioners awarded a contract to Heartland Coca-Cola Bottling Company, making them the exclusive beverage provider for Shawnee County Parks and Recreation from January 2025 through December 2027. This partnership is expected to generate additional revenue for park maintenance.

The meeting concluded with a reminder of the county's commitment to public safety, as the Sheriff's Office requested funds to replenish its drug buy fund and address maintenance issues at the Law Enforcement Center.
