In a heartfelt testimony during a recent meeting, a North Dakota nurse shared her inspiring journey from refugee to healthcare professional, highlighting the challenges and sacrifices faced by immigrant families. The nurse recounted her family's struggles upon arriving in the United States, emphasizing their reliance on the kindness of strangers and the sacrifices her parents made for their children’s future.

"My parents sacrificed their dreams to benefit their kids," she said, recalling her father's commitment to his faith and family despite working long hours in a regular job. This dedication to family values and cultural heritage shaped her upbringing, instilling a strong sense of compassion and resilience.

After moving to Bismarck in 2017, she pursued a career in nursing, initially aiming for medical school but pivoting to nursing due to financial constraints. "I realized very quickly that I was poor," she admitted, but her determination led her to work as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) while attending North Dakota State University (NDSU) nursing school.

Her journey was not without obstacles, including the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, which brought trauma and burnout. Yet, her commitment to helping others remained steadfast. "I wanted to be of help," she stated, reflecting on her decision to leave her job during the pandemic, which serendipitously led to a new opportunity as an integration specialist with Bismarck Global Neighbors.

This nurse's story underscores the resilience of immigrant families and the vital role of community support in helping individuals navigate their paths to success.
