Urbandale City Council is set to enhance safety measures at the middle school by introducing a School Resource Officer (SRO) program, following a recent budget work session. The initiative, which will begin this fall, aims to address safety concerns raised by school officials and integrate police presence into the school environment.
The SRO program will operate under a cost-sharing agreement, with the Urbandale School District covering 75% of the officer's salary and the city contributing the remaining 25%. This partnership reflects a growing trend in communities to bolster safety in schools, particularly at the middle school level where issues can begin to arise.
The police chief emphasized the importance of building relationships within the school, noting that the SRO will not only provide security but also engage with students through programs like the Culture of Integrity. The chief plans to appoint a tenured officer to the position, ensuring continuity and stability in the role, which is crucial for fostering trust and rapport with students.
In addition to the SRO program, the council discussed the future of the Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) program, which is currently facing funding uncertainties due to statewide reorganizations in mental health services. The chief expressed optimism about potential funding but advised the council to prepare for a scenario where financial support may not be available. He highlighted the need for a mental health professional within the city to address local issues, including homelessness, which tends to increase during warmer months.
Collaboration with neighboring communities, particularly Windsor Heights, was also a focal point of the discussion. The chief indicated that Windsor Heights is eager to partner on the CIT program, which could lead to shared resources and improved mental health services across both cities.
As the council moves forward with these initiatives, the focus remains on enhancing community safety and well-being, demonstrating a proactive approach to addressing the needs of Urbandale's residents. The upcoming months will be critical as the city navigates budget decisions and implements these vital programs.
