KEDC launches West Kern Economic Alliance to boost local business growth

In the heart of Taft, California, the City Council convened on February 4, 2025, to discuss pivotal developments impacting the community. The meeting opened with reflections on a recent Kern Economic Development Corporation (KEDC) gathering, where the new president of California State University, Bakersfield (CSUB) presented initiatives aimed at attracting and retaining local students. This effort is part of CSUB's rebranding as the "University of the Valley," a move that underscores its unique position as the only Division 1 university in the Central Valley.

A significant highlight of the meeting was the announcement of the West Kern Economic Alliance, a new initiative aimed at fostering economic growth in the western regions of Kern County. Richard Chapman, the executive director of KEDC, shared details about the alliance, which mirrors the East Kern Economic Alliance. The first meeting took place at Taft College, emphasizing collaboration among communities such as McFarland, Delano, and Buttonwillow. This initiative aims to enhance business opportunities and improve the quality of life for residents in West Kern.

The council also acknowledged an upcoming event at CSUB—the Hall of Fame induction ceremony on February 20, where local author Donna Barbara Higuera will be honored. Higuera, a former resident and daughter of local figures Howard and June Matney, is celebrated for her contributions to literature. The council encouraged community members to support this event and celebrate Higuera's achievements.

Additionally, city officials, including City Manager Jones, met with new Kern County Supervisor Chris Parlier to address pressing issues in the unincorporated areas surrounding Taft. During their tour, they highlighted the challenges faced by residents, particularly concerning code enforcement. It was revealed that Kern County, which spans a vast area larger than Delaware, has only ten code enforcement officers to serve its population, raising concerns about adequate representation and support for local communities.
