The Georgia State Legislature convened on February 3, 2025, to discuss critical updates regarding education and school safety initiatives. The meeting focused on the implementation of the Behavioral Threat Assessment Model (BTAM) in K-12 schools, a program aimed at enhancing safety and preventing violence in educational environments.
The Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) reported significant progress in rolling out BTAM programs across the state. GEMA officials highlighted that they have trained approximately 1,300 school officials and law enforcement officers in the BTAM concept, with a one-hour overview course available for schools. Additionally, a more comprehensive six-hour program is being implemented in eight school systems across 40 counties. GEMA emphasized that school safety is an evolving challenge, necessitating ongoing adaptation to emerging threats.
