Fredericksburg Historic Society conducts month-long archaeological assessment at Civil War site

During a recent St. Mary's County Zoning Board of Appeals meeting, discussions centered around the archaeological significance of a site linked to the Civil War and its implications for future development. The board addressed concerns raised by the Fredericksburg Historic Society, which conducted a month-long investigation at the site. Although some artifacts were discovered, they were deemed not significant enough to halt progress.

The meeting highlighted the procedural steps required when historical properties are involved. If a site is found to have colonial-era significance, a more detailed Phase 2 archaeological study may be mandated. This involves hiring specialists to conduct test digs and surveys, with the potential for any significant finds to be donated to institutions like the Smithsonian. However, property owners are not obligated to donate these artifacts.

In addition to the archaeological discussions, the board confirmed that the application for a telecommunications tower had been submitted to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Maryland Aviation Administration (MAA). Both agencies have approved the application without requiring any additional signals or lights on the tower, aligning with the telecom company's intentions.
