This initiative is part of the county's application for funding under Jake's Law, which supports the creation of fully inclusive playgrounds across municipalities.

The meeting highlighted the urgency of the project, as Unami Park is the oldest playground in Union County and currently features outdated equipment nearing the end of its life cycle. The proposed playground aims to provide a space that accommodates children of all abilities, addressing a notable gap in accessible recreational facilities within the area. The nearest inclusive playground is located 2.5 miles away in Westfield, making this project particularly vital for local families.

Officials outlined that the application for the Jake's Law grant is due on February 5, with the county seeking up to $1 million in funding, which would cover 75% of the project costs. The proposed improvements include ADA-compliant pathways connecting the playground to parking and restroom facilities, as well as enhancements to the restroom facilities to ensure they are family-friendly and accessible.

The presentation emphasized the importance of creating a welcoming environment for all children, regardless of physical or sensory challenges. The design will incorporate various play elements, such as spinning and climbing structures, as well as quiet spaces for children who may need a break from sensory stimulation.
