The Pulehunui Community Development District project is making significant strides, as highlighted in the recent HCDA meeting. Planning Director Gilbert Chang from Wausau Coimano Corporation provided an update on the project's progress, emphasizing its focus on sustainability, cultural preservation, and responsible development in central Maui.
The project, which kicked off in July 2024, is currently in the planning assessment report phase. This phase involves a thorough evaluation of existing conditions and the preparation of a cohesive strategy for infrastructure development. Chang noted that the district encompasses a mix of industrial, agricultural, and commercial uses, with key transportation routes like the Maui Veterans Highway enhancing connectivity.
The planning assessment report (PAR) is crucial for aligning land use with state and community plans. It aims to transition Pulehunui from its historical agricultural roots to a more diverse development model that respects the area's natural and cultural heritage. Project Manager Harley Myers highlighted the importance of community outreach to gather input on infrastructure needs and ensure alignment with local expectations.
Looking ahead, the team plans to finalize the PAR by the end of the year and develop a robust community outreach strategy. This will set the stage for drafting the master plans for both the district and its infrastructure, ensuring that future developments are community-driven and aligned with regional goals.
The meeting also touched on budget considerations, with members seeking clarity on the financial breakdown of the project's various phases. The collaborative effort aims to maximize resources and opportunities while addressing the community's needs, setting the foundation for long-term success in the Pulehunui area.
