A new high-speed electric vehicle (EV) charging hub is set to enhance accessibility for drivers in Central Florida, with a focus on low and moderate-income areas. This initiative was highlighted during a recent government meeting, where officials celebrated the success of the first EV charging hub opened in Downtown Orlando nearly a year ago. Since its launch, the Robinson Street hub has attracted nearly 5,900 unique customers and dispensed over 1.7 million kilowatt-hours of energy, effectively eliminating 647 metric tons of CO2 emissions—equivalent to 5.5 million road miles driven by EVs.
The Orlando Utilities Commission (OUC) is not stopping there. Plans are underway for a third hub in the Paramore District, known for its low-income community, which aims to provide high-speed charging access. This project is part of a broader strategy to construct additional charging hubs across Central Florida, with funding sought through federal grant programs.
In addition to expanding charging infrastructure, OUC is also offering commercial charging installation and maintenance services to businesses, promoting affordability for employees and customers alike. The organization is actively pursuing partnerships and exploring federal grant opportunities to support fleet electrification in the region.
The meeting underscored the importance of collaboration among various stakeholders, including the Orange County government and the Orange County Convention Center, to ensure the success of these initiatives. As OUC continues to develop its EV charging network, the focus remains on sustainability and accessibility for all residents.
