Onslow County's public libraries are kicking off 2025 with an exciting new initiative aimed at boosting reading engagement among young patrons. The beloved "Dragons and Friends" program is back, offering children the chance to earn collectible dragon-themed cards by reading. Each month, participants can earn up to four dragons by completing 30 minutes of reading for each card. This year, the program expands to include not just dragons, but also a variety of mythical creatures, enhancing the fun and creativity involved in reading.
The program, inspired by a successful model from the Dover Library, has been tailored to fit Onslow County's unique community. Library officials expressed their enthusiasm for the initiative, highlighting how it encourages children to read while also allowing them to design their own dragons and participate in tournaments for exclusive cards.
In addition to the dragon program, libraries across Onslow County are launching various activities to engage the community. The Richlands branch is hosting a "Back to School Bingo" event, providing students with a chance to win new school supplies after the winter break. Meanwhile, Snedes Ferry is introducing a "Making Time" program for adults, focusing on completing unfinished craft projects in a supportive environment.
Swansboro will feature a special program on the history of boat building, in collaboration with Harkers Island, showcasing the rich maritime heritage of the region.
As the new year begins, library officials encourage residents to explore digital resources available through apps like Hoopla and Libby, which offer a wide range of reading materials and audiobooks. With these initiatives, Onslow County's libraries are poised to foster a love for reading and creativity in the community throughout 2025.
