The Socorro Independent School District (SISD) Board of Trustees held its first regular meeting of 2025 on January 22, highlighting significant achievements in STEM education and recognizing the contributions of school counselors.

The meeting commenced with a pledge of allegiance led by Montwood High School junior Mandana Kargar, who has excelled in STEM activities and is on track to graduate with an associate degree from El Paso Community College. Superintendent Dr. José Vasquez congratulated Montwood High School for earning the national certificate for STEM Excellence, making it the first comprehensive high school in West Texas to receive this honor. He also acknowledged nine Montwood teachers who earned national certification for STEM teaching, emphasizing the commitment of the faculty and staff to provide quality education.

In addition to STEM achievements, the board recognized the success of participants in the District High School Science Fair, praising the quality of research and projects presented by students across the district. Dr. Vasquez announced a change in the board's meeting structure, stating that special recognitions for students and staff will now occur in dedicated meetings rather than during regular sessions, allowing for a more streamlined agenda.

The meeting also included a proclamation for National School Counselor Week, scheduled for February 3-7, 2025. Tammy McCaven, the director of school counseling, introduced three students who read the proclamation, highlighting the vital role school counselors play in supporting student development and success.

The board concluded the meeting with reminders of upcoming events, including a mother-daughter conference on January 25, and expressed gratitude for the volunteer service of the trustees during National School Board Recognition Month. The next special board meeting for recognitions is set for January 23, 2025.
