The East St. Louis School District 189 recently held a meeting that highlighted the community's resilience and support during challenging winter weather. The district expressed gratitude to local municipalities, including East Saint Louis, Washington Park, Cahokia Heights, Fairview Heights, and Caseyville, for their efforts in clearing icy roads after a severe winter storm. The collaboration with the Saint Clair County Board, particularly Chair Mark Kern, was acknowledged for activating resources that helped restore safe travel for students.
In addition to road clearing, the meeting celebrated the success of the "Gifts from the Heart" campaign, which brought joy to 500 children in the community during the holiday season. This initiative, also led by Mark Kern, provided new toys, bikes, and technology to children in need, ensuring a brighter holiday for many families.
The district also reported on the impactful "100 Neediest Families" program, facilitated by the United Way and supported by district social workers. This year, the initiative provided financial assistance to 234 families, with significant contributions totaling over $115,000—the largest amount in the district's history. Ten families received substantial support, each over $10,000, to address critical needs such as housing and medical expenses. The efforts of Katrice Johnson, a school social worker, were particularly highlighted for her dedication in coordinating these initiatives.
The meeting underscored the importance of community collaboration and support, showcasing how local efforts can significantly impact the lives of families in East St. Louis. As the district continues to foster these partnerships, the focus remains on enhancing the well-being of students and their families, ensuring they feel supported and connected during difficult times.
