Taunton High School mourns loss of student and community members in tragic incidents

In a poignant meeting held on January 22, 2025, the Taunton School Committee addressed significant community losses and updates on educational programs, reflecting both the challenges and successes within the district. The meeting began with a moment of silence for a Taunton High School student who tragically passed away in a motor vehicle accident, as well as for two other community members, David Lester Masker and Jeff Fernando deBrito, who were deeply respected within the school community.

Following the memorial, Superintendent Cabral introduced updates from the Taunton Alternative High School and the Taunton Public Virtual Academy, highlighting their unique roles in supporting students who face barriers in traditional educational settings. Principal Bert Delaney of the Alternative High School emphasized the importance of personal connections in fostering student success, noting that the school has graduated 811 students since its inception. Delaney shared that the school focuses on individualized graduation plans and maintains a small student-to-staff ratio to ensure that each student receives the attention they need.

Delaney also discussed the implementation of a new phone pouch system aimed at reducing distractions in the classroom, which has reportedly led to improved academic performance. He expressed pride in the school's ability to adapt and support students over extended periods, even if it takes them several years to graduate.

Principal Iza Rodriguez then provided an update on the Taunton Public Virtual Academy, which has seen steady growth in enrollment and aims to remove barriers for students through innovative, hybrid learning models. Rodriguez highlighted the importance of social-emotional learning, noting that nearly half of the students enrolled have Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) or 504 plans, indicating a significant need for tailored support.

The committee members praised the efforts of both schools in providing alternative pathways for students, particularly those who may struggle in traditional settings. They discussed the importance of maintaining strong connections with students and families, as well as the need for ongoing communication and support.
