During the La Porte City Council meeting on October 28, 2024, two local heroes were honored for their life-saving actions in a dramatic rescue that took place on September 12, 2024. Pedro Ortega and Arturo Vasquez received lifesaving awards for their quick response to a drowning incident involving a young child, Azriel Andres.
The incident unfolded when Ortega, a construction worker, noticed a small child wandering near a construction site. After realizing the child was missing, he searched the area and found Azriel floating face down in the water at a nearby playground. Without hesitation, Ortega jumped into the water to rescue the child.
As Ortega rushed to get help, Vasquez, a postal worker, witnessed the scene and immediately called 911. Despite having no prior experience with CPR, Vasquez felt compelled to assist. Following instructions from the La Porte Police Department dispatch, he began performing chest compressions while Ortega provided rescue breaths. Their teamwork proved effective, as Azriel began to breathe and regain consciousness during the third set of compressions.
Emergency services arrived shortly after, and Azriel was transported to Hermann Hospital, where he was discharged within a week without any lasting effects from the near-drowning incident. The council meeting served as a platform to recognize Ortega and Vasquez for their bravery and quick thinking, which undoubtedly saved a life.
The recognition of these individuals highlights the significant impact that ordinary citizens can have in emergency situations. The La Porte community expressed gratitude for their selfless actions, which serve as a reminder of the importance of being prepared to act in moments of crisis.
